Surge in Malware & Scams on Discord: Bitdefender Report
In a startling revelation, Bitdefender has uncovered a dramatic rise in cybercriminal activity on Discord in a report.
Over six months, an analysis of 35 million URLs revealed a staggering 50,000 dangerous links. Despite Discord’s efforts to bolster user safety, Australia and Indonesia are among the top ten nations hit hardest by these malicious activities.
Discord’s Battle Against Cybercrime
For years, Discord has been besieged by malware and scam campaigns. Developers have fought back, but Bitdefender’s data reveals that the platform remains a hotbed for scams.
In an effort to thwart malware, Discord introduced a feature that makes hosted files expire after 24 hours. However, scammers swiftly adapted and deployed new tactics. Despite these improvements, Discord is still a prime target for scams, with the United States leading in the number of victims.
Sinister Scams in Detail
One scam gaining traction involves the tantalizing promise of free Discord Nitro, a subscription service offering additional features. This scam is particularly insidious as some legitimate companies do offer Nitro as prizes. Victims are tricked into providing personal credentials or financial information via fake websites.
Another prevalent scam involves linking Discord accounts with Steam, another popular gaming service, under the guise of obtaining free Nitro. This ruse persuades users to divulge their Steam credentials, leading to potential blackmail to regain account access.

Countries in the Crosshairs
The report highlights that the United States is the most targeted country by these scams, by a considerable margin.
While Discord’s new security feature complicates attackers’ efforts to host files, it has inadvertently spurred a rise in other types of scams. Cybercriminals are relentlessly inventing new ways to deceive users, from claiming accounts are at risk to presenting bogus prizes.
The gaming community is ESPECIALLY vulnerable to these threats. And trust me, gamers should not be played with cause they know how to use their guns.
Bitdefender’s Safety Recommendations
To safeguard against these scams and other dangerous activities, Bitdefender recommends several precautionary measures:
- Always be wary of unknown links, even from seemingly familiar sources.
- Employ security solutions that offer real-time protection against malware.
- Keep operating systems and applications updated to patch vulnerabilities.
- Regularly review and adjust privacy settings on Discord to control who can send messages or files.
As cybercriminals continue to evolve their tactics, it is crucial for all Discord users, especially those in the gaming community, to stay vigilant and take preventive measures. The battle against cybercrime is relentless, and awareness is the first line of defense.
