Meta Suspends AI Use in Brazil Following Data Protection Ban
Meta has halted the use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in Brazil in response to a preliminary ban issued by the country’s data protection authority, the National Data Protection Authority (ANPD). This decision comes after ANPD raised concerns about Meta’s new privacy policy, which allowed the company to use users’ personal data to train its GenAI systems.
The preliminary ban was enacted earlier this month, citing “imminent risk of serious and irreparable damage” to the fundamental rights of data subjects. ANPD also imposed a daily fine of 50,000 reais (approximately $9,100) for non-compliance, granting Meta an additional five days to prove adherence to the decision.
Meta expressed disappointment, stating that the ban represents a “step backwards for innovation” and delays the benefits of AI technology in Brazil. The suspension reflects broader privacy concerns regarding the use of personal data without explicit consent, which has prompted U.S.-based tech giants to pause AI developments in regions with stringent data privacy laws.

Similar privacy issues have influenced other tech companies; for instance, Apple has withheld its new AI features from Europe due to regulatory concerns surrounding the Digital Markets Act (DMA).
Meta’s decision underscores ongoing global debates about AI privacy and regulatory compliance.
