Areyonga School, located 215km west of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory, serves a student body that is 100% First Nations children, with Pitjantjatjara as their first language. It is one of the many schools that Schools Plus works with under their First Nations pillar to give First Nations children access to culturally inclusive education. Despite their rich cultural heritage, the students at Areyonga faced significant numeracy challenges, particularly compared to other remote schools in the Northern Territory. This was largely because they were being taught mathematics in English, a language that presented numerous barriers to their engagement, learning, and understanding of mathematical concepts.
